Mersey Tidal – It’s time for Tidal

The Mersey Tidal Power Project (MTPP) is a large scale, low carbon generation project that has the potential to be the largest embedded generation project in the North-west, enabling electrification of heat, transport and industrial scale green hydrogen production. The project is ideally placed to respond to the challenges of climate change and to secure more predictable renewable power generation to secure Net Zero in the North West.

This is a first of a kind project for tidal range in the UK, using the abundant natural resource of the Mersey and Liverpool Bay related to the twice daily change in height of the tides to generate electricity.

Led by Liverpool City Region Combined Authority (LCRCA) this is a major publicly led, intervention that has the scale to kick start, add pace and ‘lock-in’ Net-Zero deployments close to the demand centre of 1.6 million residents in the urban, port city region.. Mersey Tidal Power Project is continuing in the early stages of its development with a considered timeline for achieving operations in 2032.

The current Phase 3 concept stage development is moving into Pre-FEED with a consideration of barrage and lagoon options that could generate between 0.6 and 3.6 GW of power for at least 120 years. In Phase 4, the project would progress activity to secure a Development Consent Order (DCO) as a national significant energy infrastructure project.
